Walking the Talk on Sustainability
Walking the Talk on Sustainability
Which is the one buzzword on everyone’s lips?
We are well past 1st Jan, so it’s nothing to do with the new year resolutions!
It’s “Sustainability”
I attended an event around it in a 5 star hotel a few weeks back and here’s what I saw:
Water was being served through 250 ml use and throw plastic bottles.
Could a 5 star hotel not provide clean drinking water in glasses?
I went to the washroom where I saw one of the speakers pulling 3 – 4 paper hand towels from the dispenser to dry wipe his hands.
Why not carry a handkerchief or use a hand dryer?
During the tea/ coffee break, hot beverages were served in sturdy paper cups (many people are not aware that takeaway paper cups are lined with a plastic lining to make them waterproof!!)
All this as one speaker after another spoke on sustainability!
It’s time to walk the talk.
Let me share another incidence.
Our trekking group (Gurgaon Walkers) went for overnight camping last week.
We had directions from the core team in terms of reducing waste and everyone was supposed to carry a steel plate, steel cup and a spoon.
We had piping hot beverages in our steel cups and enjoyed the delicious buffet on steel plates!
What about those who forgot to bring their own cutlery? They shared cups and plates with the ones who had 🙂
It was fun, and moreover it was a conscious reminder to everyone that we need to make small changes.
Starting this week, we have decided to ban any kind of disposable plates/ cutlery during treks.
I want you to think of one way to reduce some wastage.
Enough of lip service, let’s make a start 🙂
